Obituary of Susan Louise Bailey
Susan Louise Bailey passed away quietly January 18, 2023 in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she lived most of her life in Edgewood (except for a short time in Erie, PA.) A 1955 graduate of Smith College in Northampton, MA with a major in Art History, Sue spent her junior year abroad in France. After working in San Francisco for a year she returned to Edgewood where she taught for many years at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. She was also a docent for Carnegie Museum.
The Bailey house, filled with rescue animals and pets, including dogs, ducks, rabbits, a mynah bird and finches along with Sue and her parents George and Sarah Bailey, was a magnet for all the neighborhood children. There they could eat cookies, munch pretzels, sometimes bake things and help restock the woodpile or just “fuss with wood”. The Easter egg hunt and Christmas gingerbread house-making were annual events held for decades and are still remembered with great fondness by literally hundreds of now-grown kids and their families who participated.
Sue was predeceased by her parents George and Sarah Bailey and her sister Branwen Bailey Pratt. She is survived by her loving sister Judith Bailey Hanselman and six nieces and nephews who remember their time with her vividly and fondly. Her twelve great nieces and nephews have incorporated her life’s instructions, love of family and baking! into their lives . Although she will be missed, these qualities and traditions continue her legacy.
A celebration of Sue’s life will be held on Saturday April 29 at The Edgewood Club (1 Pennwood Avenue, Edgewood, PA) at 2:00. Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com
