Obituary of Richard Douglas Irwin
Richard Douglas "Dick" Irwin, 86, passed away at Seneca Place in Penn Hills Friday, April 8, 2016. He was born March 31, 1930, in Pittsburgh, to George Alexander and Helen (Douglas) Irwin. Dick was a 1948 graduate of Peabody High School, a veteran of the Korean War and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Highland Park. Dick began a lifelong career in the floral business at age 15. In 1962, he purchased East End Floral Shoppe from Rose Gumto, his mentor and friend. A 1981 fire forced him to relocate the business from East Liberty to Shadyside. From that location, he served a wide clientele until he sold the business in 2014 and retired. Dick is survived by numerous cousins and friends who will remember his kindness and good nature. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at McCABE BROS. INC. FUNERAL HOME, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside, with funeral services following at 1 p.m. After the service, friends and family are invited to enjoy refreshments and share memories of Dick at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, 4215 Fifth Ave. A private interment will be in the Temple of Memories Mausoleum in Allegheny Cemetery. For those who wish to make donations, St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Highland Park or Bridges Hospice are suggested.
