Obituary of Emily Johanna Hoffman
Age 34, of Point Breeze in Pittsburgh PA died Friday, February 17, 2023 surrounded by her family after a tragic accident.
Emily was born in Pittsburgh on May 8, 1988. She grew up in Point Breeze and was living in the house she grew up in at the time of her death. She was a proud 2006 graduate of dear ol’ WT (Winchester Thurston), where she was a lifer and senior yearbook editor. In high school, Emily began the first of many global adventures, which included Broadreach sailing and scuba diving trips to the Caribbean and Egypt. An avid fan of The West Wing (perhaps its biggest fan), she studied criminal justice at Northeastern University where she completed co-ops at the Defense Intelligence Agency, Department of Justice, and Sea Semester in the Caribbean.
Despite her adult life being so short, Emily fit in many adventures both personally and professionally. She and her sister went to Australia for more scuba diving in 2008, and she hiked the Camino de Santiago in 2013. She also spent a winter dog sledding with Siberian huskies in Vermont. Professionally, she worked as an investigator in the Boston Public Defender's office before pivoting to sailing. She started as a deckhand at the Flagship Niagara League and worked her way up to day sail coordinator for the Erie Maritime Museum. She lived in Erie for 6 years, loving all of her time on the water. While at Niagara she began experimenting with computer programming, which led her to Tech Elevator’s Pittsburgh coding bootcamp in 2019. She then worked as a software developer associate for PNC Bank before moving to IAM Robotics. Despite her busy schedule, Emily always made time to go to her favorite place – Ocean Beach III on the Jersey shore. She also played an instrumental role in the care of her sister’s many foster kittens.
Emily is survived by her adoring parents, Bob Hoffman and Christine Tyndall, and her devoted sister Beth Hoffman, all of Pittsburgh. She is also survived by Grammy (Corinne Tyndall) of Pompton Lakes, NJ and many, many extended family members and friends. And of course, she is survived by her handsome cat Sheldon and his sister, Amy, as well as her feline niece and nephew, Java and Arthur. She is preceded in death by her grandfathers and paternal grandmother, her cousin Karin, as well as cats Beau, Dusty, Tiger, Cloudy, and Snickers.
