Obituary of Francesco Paolo Balotta

On Tuesday, March 30, 2021, Francesco Paolo Balotta was called home at the age of 90. We have lost a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and remarkable man who led an extraordinary life. Francesco was born in Maierato, Italy on September 6, 1930, son of AngelaRosa and Bruno Balotta. He married the love of his life, Rosa in Italy. Rosa and Francesco recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on March 13, 2021. They emigrated to America and settled in Pittsburgh, where many "paisanos" settled as well. Francesco was employed as a cement mason with Local 526 and was an active union member for 60 years. He took great pride in his work and was recognized for his skill set and work ethic. He worked on many projects, such as the US Steel building, Allegheny Center, Three Rivers Stadium and many major projects in Western Pennsylvania. He also helped in the construction of buildings where later his grandchildren would be educated and employed. Francesco enjoyed hunting, maintaining a bountiful garden and was a veracious reader. He was also a passionate Steeler and Pirates fan. He had an extraordinary ability to fix and repair just about anything. He loved dogs and was a member of his neighborhood bocce ball league, capturing a championship one year. Francesco was an avid storyteller, who captivated his listeners, with a knack for precise details relating to exact dates, names and places. He leaves behind his wife Rosa, three living children; Angela Castellano (Raymond), Bruno Balotta (Stephanie) and Palma Imbarlina (Marco). He leaves behind 5 grandchildren; Natalie Ruffa (Dan), Jennifer Castellano, Rebecca Charrie (Josh Wilson), Elizabeth Imbarlina, Paul Imbarlina, and six great- grandchildren; Alexandro, Eliana, Marina, Mia, Jordan and Evalynne. He was preceded in death by his young brother Domenico and infant son, Bruno who passed away at birth. Francesco's grandchildren fondly remember growing up, sitting in their Nano’s garage, talking to him while he worked and watching him as he perfected his garden. They also enjoyed car rides with their Nano and later driving Nano to places. Francesco's grandchildren will miss the familiar sight of their Nano sitting on his porch, waiting to greet them. He is much loved and will be forever missed. Regrettably, due to the on-going COVID pandemic, the visitation will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Jude Parish, St. Raphael Church on Monday at 10 am. Entombment to follow at Mt. Royal Cemetery.
