Obituary of Joseph J. Smerdel

Of Murrysville, formerly of Point Breeze on Friday, January 22, 2021, age 78. Beloved husband of 56 years to Josephine E. “Jo” Smerdel; father of Kris Yanalitis (Mark), P.J. Smerdel (Kat), and Joi Catherine Brook (Tom); grandfather of Tristian Yannalitis, Rachel Kate Yannalitis, T. Hayden Brook and Channing Brook; brother of Catherine Smerdel, Mary Brandsdorfer (Louis) and Christine Piel (Bill); also survived by nieces and nephews. Joe’s family was the center of his existence. He was there for all of the life events in his children and grandchildren’s lives, driving hours for sporting events, recitals and other achievements. Friends received at McCabe Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 pm, where Funeral will commence on Tuesday at 9 am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial in St. Jude Parish, Sacred Heart Church at 10 am. Per health regulations in place, masks and social distancing will be required. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Joe’s name to the Central Catholic Endowment Fund.
