Obituary of Charles Floyd

Floyd, Charles S. Age 97, of Oakland, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2016. He was born on January 2, 1919, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late Alfred T. and Mary Lepper Floyd and brother of the late Alfred T. Floyd, Jr. He was the husband of the late Agnes H. Weber Floyd and is survived by second wife Claire Norris Floyd and daughter Sylvia Floyd. He was Uncle Charles to 29 nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. A graduate of Duquesne University, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1951. After early jobs with the Liggett Estate, the Pittsburgh Symphony and Mesta Machine Co., he managed the college bookstores at Carnegie-Mellon University and later at Duquesne University, from which he retired in 1982. He was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh for 60 years, where he was Chairman of the Music Committee, the Ministerial Search Committee, the Finance Committee and the Grounds Committee. He also sang tenor in several church choirs and in a madrigal group where he met his first wife, Agnes. He was an enthusiastic annual subscriber for many years to the Pittsburgh Symphony, Opera, Ballet, YMWHA and chamber music series, and proud supporter of Sylvia’s voice recitals in Pittsburgh and New York City. He had a long and happy life, was very much loved and will be much missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the First Unitarian Church, 605 Morewood Avenue (at Ellsworth Avenue), Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213, with the Rev. Dr. David Herndon officiating.
